John C. Martin, PhD

Dr. Martin joined Gilead Sciences in 1990 and currently serves as chairman and chief executive officer. He served as president and chief executive officer from 1996 through May 2008. Prior to joining Gilead, Dr. Martin held several leadership positions in the antiviral chemistry division at Bristol-Myers Squibb and served for six years with Syntex Corporation. Dr. Martin is a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, the board of directors of Gen-Probe Incorporated and the board of directors of the California Healthcare Institute. Dr. Martin holds a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Chicago and an M.B.A. from Golden Gate University.
